B.J. McGinn enters his third year as the Director of Athletics for Des Moines Area Community College. McGinn came to DMACC in 2006 as an assistant men’s basketball coach for hall of fame Coach Orv Salmon. In the summer of 2009, McGinn was elevated to head men’s basketball coach as Salmon assumed full-time Director of Athletics duties.
Over a nine-year span, McGinn’s basketball teams posted an overall record of 191-95 for a .670 winning percentage. His teams earned national rankings of #1 and #2 during this time, won 2 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Championships, 2 Region 11 championships, and advanced to the Elite 8 and the Final 4 of the NJCAA national tournament. McGinn was named District 8 Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015. During McGinn’s tenure as head coach DMACC produced 3 All-Americans, 32 all-region performers, and 16 NCAA Division 1 players. The Bears were also 44-44 for a 100% graduation and placement rate over his last eight seasons, with each student athlete moving on to a 4-year college or university. In addition, the DMACC Bears were named the 2011-2012 NJCAA National Academic Team of the Year for men’s basketball with an overall 3.21 team G.P.A.
McGinn took over as the Director of Athletics in the summer of 2016. Since this time, DMACC has implemented a new web site through Presto Sports-www.dmaccbears.com, re-surfaced the gymnasium floor, remodeled the varsity women’s locker room, held the first ever Fall DMACC Athletics Banquet, and added the sport of men’s cross country. DMACC is also currently working on an athletic facility expansion project. This facility will bring indoor hitting for baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf, provide auxiliary practice courts for basketball and volleyball, add a varsity weight room, as well as an athletic training room. This facility will enhance our student athlete’s overall experience, as well as provide opportunities to host camps, clinics, and events on the DMACC Boone campus.
