DMACC men's basketball team routs William Penn JV, 142-27

Eight players scored in double figures as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team routed the William Penn University junior varsity (WPUJV), 142-27, November 12 inside the DMACC gymnasium.


The Bears, ranked 19th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), took advantage of ice cold shooting by the Statesmen to improve to 3-1 with their third consecutive win. WPUJV shot just 12 percent for the game, hitting nine of 75 field goal attempts. The Statesmen shot nine percent in the first half as DMACC rolled to a 73-9 halftime advantage.


Sophomore Barlow Alleruzzo of Chicago, Ill., led DMACC with 22 points and sophomore Zach Lester of Clear Lake came away with 19. Sophomore Demarion Bariffe-Smith of Skokie, Ill., had 18 points and freshman Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., finished with 16. Other DMACC scoring included 15 points from sophomore Ty Majlik-Autry of St. Petersburg, Fla., 12 points each from sophomore Jal Bijiek of Des Moines and freshman Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter and 11 points by freshman John Herrick of Boone.


The Bears shot 65 percent in the win, making 51 of 78 field goal attempts. They were 10-of-24 from three-point range for 42 percent and 30-of-40 from the free throw line for 75 percent.


Schmitt, Alleruzzo and Bariffe-Smith recorded double-doubles with 12, 11 and 10 rebounds respectively as DMACC came away with a 72-29 advantage on the boards. Majlik-Autry barely missed a double-double with nine rebounds.


Freshman Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids led DMACC in assists with seven, Bradshaw had six and Majlik-Autry contributed five. Majlik-Autry and Hartford had two steals apiece and Bijiek blocked four shots.


The DMACC men's basketball team will host the Baymont Inn & Suites Classic Nov. 15 and 16 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears will face County Upper Academy (CUA) at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 and will play Morton College (MC) at 3 p.m. on Nov. 16.
