Freshman Kiki Deng of Des Moines scored a game-high 27 points and freshman Shelton Colwell, Jr., of Newark, N.J., added 19 points as the DMACC men's basketball team pushed its winning streak to nine consecutive games with a 94-76 decision against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) January 7 at Mason City.
With the win, DMACC, ranked second in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
NIACC, led by 19 points apiece from T.J. Cusciotta and Joseph Finch, fell to10-6 overall and 3-4 in the ICCAC.
DMACC led 40-31 at halftime and put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Trojans 54-45.
The Bears shot 45 percent from the field, making 33 of 74 field goal attempts. They were 12-of-35 from three-point range and 16-of-23 from the free throw line.
NIACC made 20 of 52 field goal attempts for 39 percent. The Trojans were just 3-of-16 from three-point range and 33-of-37 from the free throw line.
Both teams came away with 40 rebounds, including 16 offensive rebounds by the Bears. Sophomore Kaden Tate of Pearland, Texas, led the way with 10 rebounds and sophomore Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., and freshman Kavon Phillips of Davenport had five rebounds apiece. Phillips also dished out a team-leading five assists.
The DMACC men's basketball team is home to Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Jan. 7. The Lakers are 2-14 overall and 0-7 in the ICCAC.
