- Ethan Gills, Logan Barnes and Tyler Sansgaard lead DMACC with 2-under-par 70s
- Sam Vertanen rounds out DMACC performance with a tie for 14th
- ICCAC rival Kirkwood Community College finishes second
Covid-19 freshmen Logan Barnes of Altoona and Tyler Sansgaard of Nevada and freshman Ethan Gillis of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, each posted a 2-under-par score of 70 to lead the DMACC men's golf team to the team championship in the Verhille Invitational April 21 at Finkbine Golf Club in Iowa City.
The Bears shot a 285 in the 18-hole tournament and came away with a six-stroke win over runner-up and Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC0 rival Kirkwood Community College (KCC). Hawkeye Community College (HCC), another member of the ICCAC, finished third in the 12-team tournament with a score of 299.
Barnes, Sansgaard and Gillis shared medalist honors, finishing one stroke ahead of KCC's Brandon McCarty. KCC's Jax Stelzer and J.D. Pollard tied for fifth with even-par scores of 72.
Rounding out DMACC's performance was freshman Sam Vertanen of Ames. He shot a 3-over-par 75 and tied for 14th in the individual competition.
Other DMACC results included a tie for 59th by CoFR Joe Dean of Cedar Falls; a tie for 73rd by CoFR Jack West of Winterset; and a tie for 73rd by CoFR Ryan Nichols of Ogden. Dean shot an 82, West posted an 86 and Nichols turned in an 89.
The DMACC men's golf team will play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Qualifier at The Preserve at Honey Creek in Moravia April 30 and May 1.
