DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Simpson JV

The DMACC softball team swept a doubleheader from the Simpson College junior varsity March 27th at Indianola, winning by scores of 12-0 and 5-3.


The Bears, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 17-4 for the season and extended their current winning streak to four games.


Freshman Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., pitched a one-hitter and sophomore Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., and freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point belted home runs to lift DMACC to its win in the first game, which was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.


Wells and freshman Ally Pickering of Winterset each drove in four runs and Pickering paced the Bears at the plate with three hits, including a pair of doubles. DMACC took a 4-0 in the first, increased its lead to 10-0 behind a six-run second inning and scored single runs in the third and fifth innings.


Karr, freshman Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids and sophomore Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids had two hits apiece in the win and Karr drove in three runs.


Swafford struck out two and walked one in coming away with the win.


Karr, Guy and sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington had two hits apiece for the Bears in the second game. DMACC led 4-0 after the first inning, 4-3 after three innings and scored its final run in the top of the fifth.


Ruther, Guy, Wells, sophomore Ellie Dixon of Iowa City and freshmen Elly Schuemann of Marion drove in one run apiece for the Bears.


Freshman Ally Anderson of Atlantic pitched the first four innings, allowing three runs on three hits. She struck out one and walked one. Sophomore Peyton Parker of La Porte City worked the final three innings and struck out one batter.


The DMACC softball team begins Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play March 30th with a doubleheader against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENEB) at Norfolk, Neb. The Bears will then face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in a doubleheader March 31st at Creston. NENEB is 2-14 this season and SWCC is 2-9.
