DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from SWCC

Freshmen Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., and Ally Anderson of Atlantic pitched a no-hitter and a one-hitter respectively and sophomore Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan., belted a home run in each game as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team swept a doubleheader from Southwestern Community College (SWCC) March 31 at Creston.


The Bears, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, won both games by identical scores of 13-0. And both games were called after five innings because of the mercy rule.


DMACC improved to 19-4 overall and 2-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) while running its winning streak to six consecutive games.


Freshman Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in for DMACC in the opener. The Bears took a 6-0 lead in the first inning, added two runs in the second, four in the third and closed out the win with a run in the fourth.


Freshman Ally Pickering of Winterset and Wells also had two hits in the win and Wells, Swafford, freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point and sophomore Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids drove in two runs apiece.


Swafford, who leads the ICCAC in earned run average at 1.25, improved to 8-1 with the win. She struck out eight and walked one.


Lewis completed a 7-for-7 day by going 3-for-3 in the second game. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first, made it 3-0 with a run in the third and closed out the win with six runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.


Freshman Elly Schuemann of Marion was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs and Guy had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Pickering and Karr also had two hits each and Karr and Wells drove in two runs apiece.


Anderson improved to 4-0 with the win. In addition to allowing just one hit, she struck out four and did not allow a base on balls.

The DMACC softball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENEB) in a doubleheader today at Norfolk, Neb. NENEB is 2-18 overall and 0-2 in the ICCAC.
