DMACC softball team takes twin bill from Kirkwood

 

The DMACC softball team ran its winning streak to six games and improved to 20-1 for the season by sweeping a doubleheader from Kirkwood Community College (KCC) March 20 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

The Bears, ranked first in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, took the opener, 11-3, and won the second game by an 8-6 score. KCC is ranked seventh in the NJCAA Division II poll.

 

Sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City led the Bears in the opener with three hits, including a double and a home run, and six RBIs and freshman Emma Dighton of Boone doubled and homered and drove in five runs.

 

DMACC led 4-1 after two innings and 4-3 after three innings before scoring four runs in the home half of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the sixth when the game was called because of the mercy rule. Sophomores Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., and Jada Collins of Des Moines had two hits apiece for the Bears.

 

Sophomore Abby Flanagan of Coggon pitched the first two and two-thirds inning for DMACC, allowing three runs on five hits. She struck out two and walked one. Freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta went the last three and a third innings and improved to 2-0 with the win. She allowed one hit, struck out eight and walked one.

 

Kennedy paced the Bears at the plate in the second game with a home run and three RBIs. Kearns had a pair of hits, including a home run, and also drove in three runs. Sophomore Abby Husak of Polk City and freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt had two hits apiece and Kelley added a double.

 

DMACC trailed 3-0 after two innings and 4-1 in the middle of the fourth before taking a 5-4 lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Both teams scored a run in the fifth and KCC added another run in the top of the six to tie the game at 6-6 before a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning gave the Bears the win.

 

Dighton pitched the first three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. She walked one batter. Kennedy went an inning and a third allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks and sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa threw the final two innings and notched her fifth win of the season against no losses. She allowed one hit and struck out two.
