DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader against SECC

 

The DMACC softball team improved to 26-3 for the season and 6-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after sweeping a doubleheader from Southeastern Community College (SECC) March 29 at West Burlington.

 

The Bears, ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, took the opener, 5-3, and won the second game, 4-3.

 

DMACC used three runs in the first and two in the fourth to come away with the win in the opener. Freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., led the way with a single and a home run and drove in two runs. Sophomore Abby Husak of Polk City had three singles and an RBI for the Bears and freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta doubled. Freshman Emma Dighton of Boone also drove in a run for DMACC.

 

Kennedy pitched the first six innings and improved to 3-0 with the win. She allowed two runs on five hits, struck out six and walked two. Dighton threw one inning and recorded her first save of the season. She allowed one run on two hits and walked one batter.

 

Dighton had two hits, a double and a home run, and drove in two runs for the Bears in the second game. DMACC trailed 2-0 after the first inning and 3-1 after the fourth inning before scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to get the win.

 

Kearns and freshmen Kendal Clark of Humboldt and Kaylynne Salyars of Muscatine also doubled in the game and Clark and sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City drove in one run apiece.

 

Sophomore Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt pitched the first four innings for DMACC, allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out five. Sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa allowed one hit and struck out two in three innings and improved to 6-1 with the win.

 

The DMACC softball team will play doubleheaders against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) April 2 and 3 at Mason City. NIACC is 2-16 overall and 0-8 in the ICCAC.
