DMACC's Emma Dighton named ICCAC Athlete of the Week and NJCAA Player of the Week for Division II softball

DMACC's Emma Dighton named ICCAC Athlete of the Week and NJCAA Player of the Week for Division II softball
  • Dighton batted .545 in eight games during the week
  • Dighton's 18 hits included four doubles and seven home runs, including two grand slam home runs

The Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Emma Dighton the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball for the week of April 4 to 10. And the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Dighton its Player of the Week for Division II softball for the week of April 4 to 10.

 

This is the second time Dighton has been honored by the ICCAC and the second time she has been honored by the NJCAA. She was also named ICCAC Athlete of the Week for the week of March 21 to 27 and earned NJCAA honors that same week.

 

Dighton is one of five members of the DMACC softball team to be honored by the conference and one of two DMACC softball players to be honored by the NJCAA. Freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., earned ICCAC honors the weeks of March 7 to 13 and Feb. 14 to 20. Sophomore Abby Flanagan earned ICCAC honors for pitching the week of Feb. 14 to 20 and captured NJCAA honors the week of Feb. 21 to 27. DMACC sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa and freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta also earned pitching honors from the conference, Lander the week of March 14 to 20 and Kennedy the week of April 4 to 10.

 

Dighton's week included collecting 18 hits in 33 at-bats as the Bears, ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll, won eight consecutive games. Dighton's 18 hits included four doubles and seven home runs, two of which were grand slams. She drove in 29 runs and scored 24 runs.

 

Dighton leads the NJCAA in home runs with 18 and she is second in RBIs with 58. Dighton is fourth in total bases with 107 and her 43 hits are the 12th most in NJCAA Division II.

 

Dighton, of course, leads the ICCAC in home runs and RBIs.

 

For the season, Dighton is hitting .375 with a .450 on-base percentage and a .955 slugging percentage. She 43 hits in 112 at-bats and has nine doubles and a triple to go with her 18 home runs. She has stolen 20 bases in 24 attempts.

 

Dighton also pitches for DMACC and is 8-1 with one save and a 3.63 earned run average. She has thrown 52 innings and allowed 33 runs on 58 hits. Twenty-seven of the 33 runs she has allowed are earned. Dighton has struck out 44 batters, walked13 and is averaging 5.92 strikeouts per seven innings.

 

The DMACC softball team is hosting Marshalltown Community College (MCC) in a doubleheader today at the DMACC softball diamond. The Bears are 34-3 overall, 14-2 in the ICCAC and are riding a 13-game winning streak. MCC, an NJCAA Division I program, is 7-21 overall and1-9 in the ICCAC.
