The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Sydney Kennedy the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II softball (pitching) for the week of April 25 to May 1.
Kennedy, a freshman from Peosta, has been honored by the conference for the second time this season and she is the sixth member of the DMACC softball team to be honored this season. Kennedy was also honored for the week of April 4 to 10 and sophomores Lexi Lander of Onawa and Abby Flanagan of Coggon were honored for their pitching performances the week of March 14 to 20 and April 14 to 20 respectively. DMACC freshman Emma Dighton of Boone has been honored the weeks of April 11 to 17, April 4 to 20 and March 21 to 27 and freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt was honored the week of April 11 to 17. Freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., earned the award the weeks of March 7 to 13 and April 14 to 20.
Kearns made appearances in two of four games as the DMACC softball swept doubleheaders from Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 27 and May 1 at Iowa Falls.
Kennedy threw one inning in an 11-1 DMACC win in the first game of a doubleheader April 27 and struck out all three batters she faced. She followed that performance with a no-hitter over five innings in a 19-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader on May 1. She had nine strikeouts and walked one batter.
Kennedy worked a total of six innings in the two games, didn't allow a hit and struck out 12 batters.
Kennedy is 7-0 this season with six saves and an earned run average of 2.13. She has pitched 62 and a third innings, allowing 25 runs on 46 hits. Nineteen of the 25 runs allowed by Kennedy are earned. She has struck out 80 batters, walked 14 and is averaging 8.98 strikeouts per seven innings.
Kennedy leads the ICCAC in saves and is fifth in earned run average.
DMACC will face either Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) or North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-A Championship May 6 at the DMACC softball diamond.
