The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Kierra Jungers the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Softball (pitching) for the week of May 5 to 11.
Jungers, a freshman from Fonda, is being honored by the conference for the sixth time this season and she is one of 10 members of the DMACC softball team to be honored this season.
Freshman Ella Husak of Polk City, freshman Bri Tigges of Urbandale, freshman Erin Ades of Boone, sophomore Breanna Caffery of Bettendorf, freshman Macee Reilling of Dallas Center and sophomore Hilary Wilson of Solon have been honored for their hitting with Husak having earned the honor twice.
Freshman Jacki Baas of Bondurant and sophomore Macy Blomgren of Waukee join Jungers as DMACC pitchers who have been honored for their pitching this season. Both have been honored twice.
Jungers pitched the Bears to their 11th consecutive district championship in a 12-0 decision against Dawson Community College (DCC) May 9 at the DMACC softball diamond.
The Bears took the first game of the doubleheader, 10-2, and Jungers allowed four hits and struck out four batters in four innings in the circle in the nightcap. Blomgren threw the final inning in the win, which came via the run rule.
Jungers is 25-1 with a 1.41 earned run average this season. She has pitched 129 and a third innings, allowing 32 runs, 26 earned runs, on 81 hits. Jungers has struck out 212 batters and walked 42. She is averaging 11.47 strikeouts per seven innings and is allowing an average of .95 walks and hits per inning.
Jungers leads the ICCAC in wins and is second in strikeouts and ERA. She is fifth nationally in strikeouts.
The DMACC softball team, 55-5, will make its 11th consecutive appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Softball World Series May 19 to 24 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. The Bears, who have qualified for the tournament in 12 of the past 13 seasons, will be the tournament's No. 4 seed and will play either Mott Community College (MCC) or Illinois Central College (ICC) May 20 at 11 a.m. MCC is seeded 20th and ICC is seeded 13th.
