DMACC softball team goes 2-1 in JUCO Extravaganza
  • DMACC beats Northwest-Shoals CC and Georgia Military College
  • Bears lose to second-ranked Copiah-Lincoln CC
  • Two scheduled games are cancelled

 

The DMACC softball team improved to 4-1 for the season after winning two of three games in the JUCO Extravaganza February 20 and 21 at Oxford, Ala.

 

The Bears, ranked fifth in the Division II Preseason Poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), opened tournament play with a 3-1 loss to second-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Community College (CLCC) on Feb. 20 and bounced back to defeat Northwest-Shoal Community College (NWSCC), 6-0, also on Feb. 20. DMACC recorded a 4-1 win over Georgia Military College (GMC) on Feb. 21, its final game of the tournament.

 

Games against Central Alabama Community College (CACC) on Feb. 21 and College of Lake County (CLC) on Feb. 22 were cancelled after both teams walked away from the tournament.

 

CLCC overcame a 1-0 DMACC lead with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to get the win in the Bears' tournament opener.

 

DMACC, which took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by sophomore. Macee Reiling of Dallas Center, was limited to that lone hit by CLCC's Addison Lindley, who struck out one and walked three. Sophomore Kiera Jungers of Fonda suffered the loss. She threw seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts and a walk.

 

Reiling tripled and sophomores Erin Ades of Boone and Bri Tigges of Urbandale each doubled in DMACC's win over NWSCC. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

 

Tigges had three hits in the win and Reiling came away with two. She and sophomore Jasey Anderson of Estherville drove in two runs apiece and Ades added an RBI.

 

Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first four innings and came away with the win. She allowed three hits, struck out three and walked two. Sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

 

Tigges, Reiling, sophomore Mo Purdy of Des Moines and freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines had two hits apiece in the Bears' win over GMC. Sophomore Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand accounted for the only extra-base hit with a double.

 

DMACC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and made it a 3-0 game with a run in the second. GMC closed to 3-1 with a run in the fourth and DMACC closed out the win with a run in the bottom of the inning.

 

Tigges and Purdy drove in one run apiece for the Bears.

 

Baumgardner worked the first four innings and got the win. She allowed one run on five hits. Baas threw three innings, allowing two hits and striking out two batters.

 

The DMACC softball team will play in the Midwest Classic Feb. 27 to March 1 at Shawnee Mission, Kan. The Bears will face Neosho County Community College (NCCC) and Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SECC) on Feb. 27. DMACC will play SECC and Morton College (MC) on Feb. 28 and will close out tournament play against Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) and Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) on March 1.
