DMACC softball team splits first two games in Midwest College Classic

 

The DMACC softball team stands at 5-2 for the season after splitting its first two games in the Midwest College Classic at Shawnee Mission, Kan.

 

The Bears, ranked sixth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) opened the tournament on February 26 with a 12-2, 5-inning win over Indian Hills Community College (IHCC)  and a 3-2 loss to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) in their second outing of the day.

 

Both IHCC and IWCC are NJCAA Division I schools and are members of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Neither school is ranked in the NJCAA Division I poll but IWCC has received votes.

 

DMACC took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against IHCC and put the game away with two runs in the second and seven in the fourth.

 

Sophomores Bri Tigges of Urbandale, Macee Reiling of Dallas Center and Erin Ades of Boone paced the Bears' 12-hit attack with two hits apiece, including a home run and three runs batted in from Ades. Freshman Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf also homered and drove in three runs. Tigges and freshman Luci Weber of Dubuque each drove in two runs.

 

Sophomore Jacki Baas pitched all five innings and improved to 3-0 with the win. She allowed two runs on four hits, struck out five and walked three.

 

Reiling drove in both DMACC runs in the loss to IWCC. The Bears led 1-0 after the first inning and went up 2-0 with a run in the top of the third. IWCC tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and got the win with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

 

DMACC was held to seven singles in the game, including two each by Tigges and Ades.

 

Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda fell to 1-2 with the loss. She went seven and a third innings, allowing three runs on six hits with 14 strikeouts.

 

The DMACC softball team will continue tournament play with two games today and two on Feb. 28. The Bears will face Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) and Neosho County Community College (NCCC) today and will play Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SECC) and Allen County Community College (ACCC) on Feb. 28.
