The DMACC softball team stands at 9-4 for the season after splitting two games on the opening day of the Branson Grand Slam Classic March 5 at Branson, Mo.
Sophomores Mo Purdy of Des Moines and Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola drove in two runs apiece in an 8-2 win over Fort Scott Community College (FSCC) in the Bears' opener and sophomore Bri Tigges of Urbandale drove in a pair of runs as DMACC, ranked sixth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), dropped a 3-2 decision to top-ranked Murray State College (MSC) in the Bears' second game of the day.
FSCC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and DMACC responded with a run in the bottom of the second, three in the third and four in the fifth to come away with the win. FSCC added its second run in the top of the fourth.
Purdy, Blake, freshman Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf and freshman Luci Weber of Dubuque placed the Bears' 11-hit attack with two hits apiece, including a double from Purdy. DMACC also got a solo home run from Tigges.
Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first six innings and remained unbeaten at 4-0. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out one and walked three. Sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater pitched one inning, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.
MSC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and then fell behind 2-1 when DMACC scored twice in the top of the third. MSC then got the win behind two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
DMACC came away with six hits, including a double by Tigges, who drove in both runs.
Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda pitched all six innings and fell to 3-2 with the loss. She allowed three runs on four hits, struck out 11 and walked two.
The DMACC softball team will play Johnson County Community College (JCCC) and Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) today in the Branson Grand Slam Classic. JCCC is ranked 13th in NJCAA Division II.
