DMACC softball team opens conference play with two wins

 

Freshmen Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines and Cali Richards of Des Moines and sophomore Baylor Gregory of Papillion, Neb., did most of the damage at the plate as the DMACC softball team began play in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) by sweeping a doubleheader from Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENCC) March 19 at Norfolk, Neb.

 

Mohler homered and doubled and drove in three runs in the Bears' 5-2 win in the first game and Richards and Gregory drove in two runs apiece in an 8-6 win in the second game.

 

With the wins DMACC improved to 17-6 overall and 2-0 in the ICCAC.

 

DMACC, ranked ninth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won the opener with two runs in the top of the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. NECC scored both of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Mohler and sophomores Bri Tigges of Urbandale and Macee Reiling of Dallas Center had two hits apiece, including a pair of doubles from Reiling and one from Tigges, who drove in one DMACC run. Freshman Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf also doubled for the Bears and freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines drove in a run.

 

Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda went the distance and improved to 6-4 with the win. She allowed two runs on four hits and struck out 13 batters.

 

DMACC trailed 1-0 after the first inning of the second game but rallied for four runs in the second, two in the four and one each in the fifth and seventh innings to come away with the win. NENCC scored twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth in addition to its run in the first.

 

Mohler went 4-for-4, getting two singles to go with a pair of doubles and Reiling, Teerlinck, Gregory, sophomores Erin Ades of Boone and Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola had two hits apiece for the Bears including doubles from Teerlinck and Blake. Blake. Reiling, Teerlinck and Ades had one RBI apiece.

 

Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant threw all seven innings and ran her record to 9-2 with the win. She allowed six runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked one.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) and Hawkeye Community College (HCC) in doubleheaders March 21 and 22 at Cedar Rapids and Hudson, respectively. KCC, ranked fourth in the NJCAA Division II poll. The Eagles are 22-4 overall and 2-0 in the ICCAC. HCC is 8-12 and 1-1. The Redtails will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) on March 21 before playing the Bears the next day.
