DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Ellsworth CC

 

The DMACC softball team improved to 22-7 overall and 7-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after sweeping a doubleheader from Ellsworth Community College (ECC) March 24 at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

Sophomore Bri Tigges of Urbandale and freshman Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines drove in three runs apiece in DMACC's 10-1 win in the opener and sophomore Macee Reiling of Dallas Center had four RBIs in a 15-2 win in the nightcap. Both games were called after five innings because of the run rule.

 

Sophomores Kierra Jungers of Fonda and Jacki Baas of Bondurant got the wins. Jungers is 8-5 after winning the opener and Baas stands at 11-2.

 

DMACC, ranked ninth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), scored two runs in the first, six in the second and two in the fourth in winning the first game. ECC tallied its lone run in the top of the fifth.

 

Tigges, Mohler, Reiling, sophomore Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and sophomore Jacey Anderson of Estherville paced the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a home run from Tigges and a pair of doubles from Neuroth and Mohler. Sophomore Baylor Gregory of Papillion, Neb., also doubled and sophomore Erin Ades of Boone had a triple. Neuroth also drove in a pair of runs.

 

Jungers allowed one hit, struck out eight and walked one over four innings. Sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater pitched one inning, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks.

 

Mohler had three hits and Tigges, Reiling and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola added two apiece in the Bears' win in the second game. Reiling belted a home run and DMACC got a double from freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines. Ades and Richards joined Reiling with multiple RBIs with three and two respectively.

 

DMACC, playing at home for the first time this season, took a 4-0 lead in the first, made it an 8-0 game with four runs in the second and closed out the win with seven runs in the third. ECC scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth.

 

Baas allowed two hits and struck out six in four innings in the circle. Freshman Grace Herrem of Fall Creek, Wis., gave up two runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks in one inning of work.

 

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) March 26 at Creston.  SWCC is an NJCAA Division I program. The Spartans are 7-21 this season and have not yet played any Division I opponents. DMACC takes a five-game winning streak into the doubleheader
