Freshman Dana Blake of Indianola had two hits and drove in four runs as the DMACC softball team kept its national championship hopes alive with a 10-1 win over Louisburg Community College (LCC) in an elimination game May 21 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Softball World Series at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Bears scored all of their runs in the first four innings and earned the win via the run rule after LCC batted in the top of the fifth. DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the first, made it a 4-0 game with three runs in the second and had a 6-1 lead after three innings. The Bears closed out the win with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sophomore Bailey Gregory of Papillion, Neb., collected three hits in the win and sophomores Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and Erin Ades of Boone and freshmen Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines and Cali Richards of Des Moines had two hits apiece.
Extra-base hits included doubles by Ades, Gregory, Blake, Richards and sophomore Mace Reiling of Dallas Center and a triple from Ades. Neuroth drove in two DMACC runs and Gregory, Ades, Richards and Reiling each drove in one run.
Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda pitched all five innings and improved to 25-6 with the win. She allowed one run on four hits, struck out nine and walked one.
The DMACC softball team, seeded ninth, will face tenth-seeded State College of Florida (SCF) in an elimination game at 10 a.m. today. The DMACC-SCF winner will advance to another elimination game at 3 p.m. today
The double-elimination tournament continues through May 23 at Tyger River Park.
