Freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf led the way as the DMACC women's basketball team stayed unbeaten at 3-0 with a win over Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC) on November 4 and a win over Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) on Nov. 6.
Carr tallied 24 points in DMACC's 82-77 win over BHMCC at Moline, Ill., and scored 17 points in a 69-51 win over ARCC inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Chloe Clayburg of Northwood joined Carr in double figures with 19 and 11 points respectively in DMACC's win over BHMCC. The Bears led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and had a 35-33 advantage at halftime. They took control of the game by outscoring the Braves 24-14 in the third quarter for a 59-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
DMACC, ranked 25th in the Division II preseason poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), shot 40 percent from the field, connecting on 31 of 77 field goal attempts, including going 6-of-32 from three-point range. The Bears made 14 of 22 free throw attempts.
Sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids barely missed double figures with eight points and she grabbed 11 rebounds, including nine defensive rebounds, to lead DMACC to 42 rebounds. Carr and Jensen added nine rebounds apiece.
Freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly led DMACC in assists with four and her sister, Jordan Valley of Waverly, topped the Bears in steals with four. Jensen and Brooklyn Valley had three steals apiece.
Jensen and Clayburg also joined Carr in double figures in the win over ARCC with 15 and 10 points respectively. DMACC trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and had a 27-23 lead at halftime. The Bears led 43-33 at the end of the third quarter and used a 12-0 run to push their advantage to as many as 18 points with less than three minutes to play.
DMACC shot 31 percent from the field, making 22 of 70 shots. The Bears were 7-of-28 from three-point range and 18-of-21 from the free throw line.
ARCC, led by 17 points from Mariam Alowonle, was 20-of-61 from the field for 33 percent. The Golden Rams connected on four of 18 three-point attempts and were 7-of-18 from the free throw line.
Alowonle had a double-double with 17 rebounds as ARCC came away with a 41-38 advantage on the boards. Jensen and Brooklyn Valley led DMACC with seven rebounds apiece and Clayburg added six. Jordan Valley dished out a team-high six assists and Jensen had three assists. She topped the Bears in steals with four and Carr and Jordan Valley had three apiece.
The DMACC women's basketball team is idle until Nov. 14 and 15 when the Bears will play in the JCCC Classic at Overland Park, Kan. DMACC will play North Central Missouri College (NCMC) on Nov. 14 and will face the University of Saint Mary Junior Varsity on Nov. 15. NCMC is ranked 10th in the NJCAA Division II preseason poll.
