DMACC women's basketball team gets two wins in JCCC Classic

A 70-60 upset of 13th-ranked North Central Missouri College (NCMC) highlighted the weekend as the DMACC women's basketball team picked up a pair of wins in the Johnson County Community College (JCCC) Classic Nov. 14 and 15 at Overland Park, Ill.

 

In addition to the win over NCMC on Nov. 14, the Bears capped the weekend with a 101-44 win over the Saint Mary's University Junior Varsity (SMUJV) on Nov. 15 to stay undefeated at 5-0. DMACC is ranked 22nd in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

 

Freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf led the Bears to their win over NCMC with 16 points and sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Chloe Costello of Northwood contributed 13 points apiece.

 

DMACC controlled the tempo most of the game, leading 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, 30-18 at halftime and 52-35 at the end of the third quarter. NCMC led just once, 5-3 with 6 minutes, 26 seconds remaining in the first quarter. A pair of free throws from Carr got the Bears a 5-5 tie and they went ahead for good on two free throws by freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly with 5:33 left in the period. The free throws ignited a 9-3 run that put DMACC on top 14-8 with 1:36 left on the clock.

DMACC outscored the Pirates 8-3 in the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter for a 25-14 advantage and scored the first 12 points of the third quarter for a 42-30 lead and led by as many as 24 points, 44-20, with 5:01 left on the clock.

 

NCMC got within seven at 66-59 with 1:46 to play but Jensen rescued the Bears with a layup with just less than a minute to play and sophomore Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., drained a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left for a 70-60 DMACC lead.

 

DMACC shot 33 percent from the field, making 24 of 72 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-25 from three-point range and 16-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

NCMC, which saw a four-game winning streak end and fell to 4-2, was led by Sidney Aeschliman and Tailer Morrison with 10 points each. The Pirates were 20-of-46 from the field, including 6-of-14 from three-point range. They made 14 of 24 free throw attempts.

 

NCMC came away with a 41-37 advantage in rebounding with sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids leading DMACC with 10 rebounds. Jensen had seven rebounds and topped the Bears in steals with eight. Clayburg led the Bears in assists with five and Jensen added four.

 

Jensen led five players in double figures with 23 points in the Bears' win over SMUJV. Carr came away with 13 points, Costello and freshman Jaxy Knight of Tingley had 12 points apiece and sophomore Missy Evizic of Council Bluffs added 11.

 

DMACC led all the way. It was 25-13 at the end of the first quarter, 51-23 at halftime and 83-29 at the end of the third quarter.

 

The Bears shot 42 percent, hitting 38 of 91 field goal attempts. They were 13-of-41 from three point range and 12-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

SMUJV, led by Juliana Walker's 17 points, made 15 of 62 field goal attempts for 24 percent. The Spires were 6-of-32 from three-point range and 8-of-18 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 43-41 advantage on the boards with Carr and Evezic grabbing six rebounds apiece to lead the Bears. Brooklyn Valley dished out a team-high 10 assists and Jordan Valley of Waverly topped the Bears in steals with six.
