The DMACC women's basketball team ran its winning streak to seven games and stayed unbeaten for the season after winning a pair of games in the DMACC Classic November 21 and 22 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly scored 15 points as the Bears handed the Haskell Indian Nation University Junior Varsity (HINUJV) a 92-61 loss on Nov. 21 and sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids tallied 15 points in a 61-49 win over Triton College (TC) on Nov. 22.
DMACC, ranked 18th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led throughout its win over HINUJV. The Bears were up 30-4 at the end of the first quarter, 51-23 at halftime and 77-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Freshman Abriya Watkins of Omaha, Neb., sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls and freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf joined Valley in double figures with 13, 11 and 10 points respectively.
DMACC shot 47 percent, hitting 32 of 68 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-32 from three-point range and 18-of-24 from the free throw line.
HINUJV made 20 of 65 field goal attempts, including 8-of-32 from three-point range, for 31 percent. HINUJV was 13-of-22 from the free throw line for 59 percent.
DMACC came away with a 53-19 advantage on the boards with Carr's 12 rebounds leading the way. Watkins finished with eight rebounds and sophomore Whitney Jensen of Remsen had six. Freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly topped the Bears in assists with six and Jensen led the way in steals with five.
Jensen and Carr joined Clayburg in double figures with 13 and 10 points respective in DMACC's win over TCC. The Bears had a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 32-26 advantage at halftime. They were up 44-37 after three quarters.
DMACC shot 34 percent from the field, making 23 of 67 field goal attempts, including 6-of-32 from beyond the arc. The Bears were successful on nine of 13 attempts at the free throw line.
TCC was led by Jayla Rankin with a game-high 26 points. The Trojans shot 29 percent from the field, draining 16 of 56 field goal attempts. TC was 5-of-18 from three-point range and 12-of-18 at the free throw line.
Carr had nine rebounds and Clayburg and Wheeler added six apiece as DMACC won the rebound battle, 41-34. Wheeler dished out a team-high five assists and Jordan Valley came away with a team-leading five steals.
The DMACC women's basketball team opens Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Nov. 25 at Marshalltown. MCC is 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the ICCAC.
