DMACC women's basketball team tops MCC for eighth straight win

Sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood led four players in double figures with13 points as the DMACC women's basketball team ran its winning streak to eight consecutive games behind an 85-58 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) November 25 at Marshalltown.

 

Sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and freshmen Jaxy Knight of Tingley and Alivia Carr of Bettendorf scored 12, 11 and 10 points respectively as the Bears, ranked 16th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC never trailed in the win. The Bears scored the game's first 10 points before a 9-2 run by the Tigers got them within three at 12-9. A jumper from sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls ignited an 8-3 run that gave DMACC a 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and the Bears pulled away from there, using a 14-1 run early in the second period for a 34-13 advantage.

 

DMACC led 44-23 at halftime and 64-40 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Wheeler finished with eight points and sophomore Whitney Jensen of Remsen and freshman Abriya Watkins of Omaha, Neb., added nine points apiece.

 

The Bears shot 51 percent from the field, hitting 36 of 71 field goal attempts. They were 9-of-26 from three-point range and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

 

MCC, led by Jaeda Turner's 22 points, shot 41 percent with 22 field goals from 54 attempts. The Tigers connected on eight of 21 shots from beyond the arc and made six of 10 free throws.

 

Watkins eight rebounds lifted DMACC to a 38-36 advantage on the boards. Clayberg added six rebounds, while Carr had fiver. Jensen topped DMACC in assists with seven and in steals with six.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is idle until Dec. 3 when the Bears face Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m. CCC, the newest member of the ICCAC, is 4-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
