DMACC women's basketball team improves to 11-0 with two wins

The DMACC women's basketball team, ranked 16th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), stayed unbeaten at 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) behind victories over the Graceland University Junior Varsity (GUJV) and Southwestern Community College (SWCC).

 

Freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf led four players in double figures with 20 points as the Bears handed the GUJV a 79-62 loss December 4 at Lamoni and freshman Brooklyn Valley had a team-high 17 points in a 67-38 win over SWCC Dec. 6 at Creston.

 

DMACC led throughout the game in its win over the GUJV. The Bears were up 23-13 at the end of the first quarter, 48-23 at halftime and 59-42 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Sophomores Chloe Costello of Northwood, Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs and Whitney Jensen of Remsen joined Carr in double figures with 15, 11 and 10 points respectively.

 

DMACC shot 42 percent in the win, making 29 of 69 field goal attempts. The Bears made five of 21 shots from beyond the arc for 24 percent and connected on 18 of 27 free throw attempts for 67 percent.

 

GUJV was 25 of 75 from the field, for 32 percent. The Yellowjackets were 7-of-25 from three-point range and 7-of-14 from the free throw line.

 

Jensen's nine rebounds and eight from Carr helped DMACC to a 54-38 advantage on the boards. Jensen and freshman Jaxy Knight of Tingley led the Bears in assists with four apiece and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly topped DMACC in steals with four.

 

Evezic, Carr and sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids joined Brooklyn Valley in double figures with 14, 12 and 10 points respectively in the Bears' win over SWCC. DMACC opened the game with a 12-0 run and never looked back. It was 21-8 at the end of the first quarter, 34-14 at halftime and 48-28 at the end of the third quarter.

 

The Bears shot 35 percent, making 28 of 80 field goal attempts. They were 5-of-30 from three-point range and 6-of-10 from the free throw line.

 

SWCC was led by Jaide McPhee with 11 points. The Spartans were 14-of-55 from the field, including 4-of-20 from three point range. They made 6 of 13 free throw attempts.

 

Jensen's 10 rebounds, eight from Clayburg and seven by sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls lifted DMACC to a 50-28 advantage on the boards. Jensen topped the Bears in assists with five Jordan Valley led the way in steals with four.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team faces Southeastern Community College (SECC) Dec. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m. SECC is 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the ICCAC.
