Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) ended the DMACC women's basketball team's 13-game winning streak with a 65-60 win over the Bears December 15 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

The Hawks got the job done in the fourth quarter where they outscored the Bears 31-15 after trailing 45-34 entering the period. That quarter was one of two in which the DMACC suffered a scoring drought that led to their demise.

DMACC, which fell to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), had taken a 20-8 lead after the first quarter but was outscored 19-7 in the second period as NECC gained a 27-27 tie at halftime. The Bears won the third quarter, 18-7, for their 11-point margin heading into the fourth quarter.

Freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf led DMACC with 21 points and sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood reached double figures with 17 points. The Bears shot 30 percent in the loss, making 20 of 67 field goal attempts. They were 7-of-28 from three-point range and 13-of-22 from the free throw line.

NECC got 20 points from Aaliyah Jones. The Hawks connected on 24 of 64 field goal attempts for 38 percent and made five of 17 shots from beyond the arc. They were 12-of-14 at the free throw line.

Sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids pulled down 11 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 42-29 advantage on the boards. Carr added seven rebounds and sophomore Whitney Jensen of Remsen had six. Carr and freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly led the Bears in assists with three apiece and Costello, Jensen and Valley had two steals apiece.

The DMACC women's basketball team, playing their final game before Christmas break, improved from 14th to 13th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Bears are one of four members of the ICCAC to be ranked this week and they will see the other three teams in their first three games of the new year. Kirkwood Community College (KCC) is ranked second and will play DMACC Jan. 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium. North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), is ranked 15th and will play the Bears Jan. 7 at Mason City and Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) is ranked 20th and will face DMACC Jan. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
