Kirkwood Community College (KCC), ranked second nationally in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), handed the DMACC women's basketball team its second consecutive loss behind a 59-53 win January 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The loss came on the heels of a 65-60 setback against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC), Dec. 15 in the Bears' final game before Christmas break.
DMACC, ranked 13th in NJCAA Division II, got a game-high 19 points from freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf in falling to 13-2 overall and 5-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Sophomores Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and Whitney Jensen of Remsen joined Carr in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively.
The Eagles improved to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the ICCAC with the win. Olivia Wren led the way with 14 points and Kaci Crum added 13.
DMACC led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter but was outscored 21-10 in the second period as KCC took a 34-25 lead into halftime. The Eagles led 45-34 at the end of the third quarter.
DMACC shot 32 percent, hitting 21 of 66 field goal attempts. The Bears were just three of 27 from three-point range and made eight of 11 free throw attempts.
KCC shot 39 percent from the field, making 21 of 54 field goal attempts. The Eagles connected on five of 24 shots from beyond the arc and made 12 of 15 free throw attempts.
KCC had a 38-35 advantage on the boards with Jensen's eight rebounds leading DMACC. Carr added seven rebounds and Clayburg came away with six. Clayburg dished out a team-leading three assists and Jensen and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly topped the Bears in steals with four apiece.
The DMACC women's basketball team will face their second consecutive ranked opponent Jan. 7 when the Bears travel to Mason City to meet North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). The Trojans, ranked 15th in NJCAA Division II, are 12-2 overall and 6-2 in the ICCAC.
