Sophomores Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and Whitney Jensen of Remsen scored 13 and 11 points respectively as the DMACC women's basketball team dropped a 62-58 decision to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) January 7 at Mason City.
With the loss, DMACC, ranked 17th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), fell to 13-3 overall and 5-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
NIACC, ranked 14th in NJCAA Division II, improved to 13-2 and 7-2.
NIACC led 23-17 at the end of the first quarter and a 11-4 run by DMACC in the second period gave the Bears a 28-27 lead at halftime. NIACC had a 51-46 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
DMACC shot 36 percent from the field, hitting 19 of 53 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-18 from three-point range and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.
NIACC, led by Reggi Spotts' 18 points, made 21 of 54 field goal attempts for 39 percent. The Trojans were 5-of-19 from three-point range and 15-of-25 from the free throw line.
NIACC had a 39-34 advantage on the boards with Clayburg's seven rebounds leading the Bears. Jensen topped DMACC in assists with five and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly came away with a team-leading six steals.
The DMACC women's basketball team faces another ranked opponent when the Bears entertain Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Jan. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ILCC is ranked 16th in NJCAA Division II. The Lakers are 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the ICCAC.
