DMACC women's basketball team falls to Iowa Central CC, 51-44

Freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly scored seven points and sophomores Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and Whitney Jensen of Remsen added six points apiece as the DMACC women's basketball team dropped a 51-44 decision to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) January 17 at Fort Dodge.

 

The loss was the sixth straight for the Bears, who are ranked 20th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). They fell to 13-6 overall and 5-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

ICCC, which improved to 14-5 and 7-4, led throughout the game. The Tritons were up 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, 29-21 at halftime and 39-35 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC got baskets from Valley and Clayburg in the first 77 seconds of the fourth quarter to gain a 39-39 tie but ICCC responded with a 10-2 run for a 49-41 lead just more than five minutes to play. A jumper from sophomore Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., made it a five-point game at 49-44 with four minutes left but the Bears failed to score the rest of the way while holding the Tritons to just two points.

DMACC shot just 26 percent in the loss, making 17 of 65 field goal attempts. The Bears went 3-of-22 from three-point range and 7-of-12 at the free throw line.

 

ICCC, led by Izzy Bassett's 11 points, made 19 of 47 field goal attempts for 40 percent. The Tritons connected on seven of 26 shots from beyond the arc and were 6-of-9 from the free throw line.


DMACC got 11 rebounds from Jensen to come away with a 41-34 advantage on the boards. Freshman Mariam Omran of Giza, Egypt, finished with seven rebounds and freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf added five. Valley led the Bears in assists with two and Jensen had a team-high three steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Jan. 21 inside the DMACC gymnasium with a real opportunity to end its losing streak. MCC is 5-15 overall and 2-10 in the ICCAC.
