DMACC women's basketball team tops MCC 61-55 to end six-game losing streak

Sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds as the DMACC women's basketball team ended a six-game losing streak with a 61-55 win over Marshalltown Community College (MCC) January 21 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., reached double figures with 10 points as the Bears improved to 14-6 overall and 6-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with a sweep of their season series against the Tigers.

 

DMACC led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter but got outscored 17-11 in the second period as MCC closed to within two at halftime, 24-22. The Bears came away with a 19-14 advantage in the third period to lead 43-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

 

DMACC shot 31 percent in the win, making 21 of 68 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-30 from three-point range and 14-of-21 at the free throw line.

 

MCC fell to 5-16 and 2-11 with the loss. The Tigers, led by Ariyanah Custard's 23 points, were 19-of-59 from the field for 32 percent. They connected on six of 20 shots from beyond the arc and were 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

 

MCC had a 34-28 advantage on the boards with Clayburg's 13 rebounds leading DMACC. Sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs had five rebounds apiece. Jensen, sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly led the Bears in assists with three apiece and Dunn, Jensen and Valley had three steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will host Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in an ICCAC matchup Jan. 24. The Spartans are 4-16 overall and 0-12 in the ICCAC. Their losses include a 67-38 decision against DMACC Dec. 6 at Creston.
