Sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen, Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls and Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids dominated play as the DMACC women's basketball team came away with a 68-35 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) January 31 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Jensen had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Wheeler came away with 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Bears improved to 17-6 overall and 9-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Clayburg also scored 11 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
The win avenged a 51-44 loss to ICCC Jan.17 at Fort Dodge and gave the Bears a split of their two-game series against the Tritons.
ICCC, led by Shakani Murray's 13 points, fell to 17-6 and 10-5. The Tritons were held to 19 percent shooting in the loss.
DMACC led throughout the game. The Bears were up 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and outscored ICCC 21-6 in the second period for a 35-16 halftime cushion. They used a 17-11 advantage in the third period for a 51-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
DMACC shot 35 percent from the field, hitting 23 of 65 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-26 from three-point range and 15-of-18 from the free throw line.
ICCC made just 11 of 59 field goal attempts and went 1-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Tritons were better at the free throw line, making 15 of 18 attempts
Jensen, Wheeler and Clayburg lifted DMACC to a 50-36 advantage in rebounding. Jensen led the Bears in assists with six and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly dished out a team-leading six assists.
The DMACC women's basketball team will play Southeastern Community College (SECC) Feb. 4 at West Burlington. The Blackhawks are 7-16 overall and 2-13 in the ICCAC. Their losses include a 63-35 decision against DMACC Dec. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
