Sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood scored 24 points and sophomore Whitney Jensen of Remsen added 14 as the DMACC women's basketball team upset ninth-ranked North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), 68-38, February 11 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The Bears, who stretched their winning streak to seven games, opened the game with a 9-0 run and never trailed as they improved to 10-6 overall and 12-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
NIACC, which saw it 10-game winning streak end, was led by 16 points from Zaria Falls. The Trojans, who defeated DMACC 62-58 when the two teams played Jan. 7 at Mason City, fell to 21-3 and 15-3.
DMACC led 13-8 after the first quarter and all but put the game out of reach by outscoring NIACC 20-4 in the second period for a 33-12 advantage at intermission. DMACC led 13-11 with 8 minutes, 23 seconds left in the period and used a 10-0 run for a 23-11 lead with 4:46 remaining in the half. The Bears were up 45-20 at the end of the third quarter.
DMACC, which split its season series with the Trojans, shot 49 percent in the win, hitting 25 of 51 field goal attempts. The Bears made four of 15 attempts from beyond the arc and connected on 14 of 19 free throw attempts.
NIACC shot just 23 percent, making 13 of 57 field goal attempts. The Trojans were 2-of-25 from three-point range and 10-of-19 from the free throw line.
NIACC had a 34-31 advantage on the boards with Jensen's six rebounds leading DMACC. Sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls led the Bears in assists with four and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly came away with five steals with Jensen and freshman Mariam Omran getting four apiece.
The DMACC women's basketball team will be home to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) Feb. 14 inside the DMACC gymnasium and will be seeking to avenge another loss during their six-game losing streak. The Reivers, 13-11 overall and 10-8 in the ICCAC, handed the Bears a 56-52 loss when the two teams played Jan. 14 at Council Bluffs.
