Sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls scored 13 points and sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood and freshman Mariam Omran of Giza, Egypt, added 11 and 10 points respectively as the DMACC women's basketball team dropped a 76-52 decision to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) February 23 at Cedar Rapids.
The loss was the second straight for the Bears, who fell to 21-8 overall and 13-8 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
KCC, which improved to 25-3 and 19-2, was led by Whitney Sullivan with 13 points. The Eagles are ranked seventh in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
As in previous games, the Bears started well, opening up a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. KCC outscored DMACC 25-10 in the second period for a 38-30 lead at halftime and then took control of the game behind a 21-7 difference in the third period for a 59-37 lead at the end of the quarter.
DMACC shot 32 percent from the field, hitting 17 of 53 field goal attempts. The Bears made nine of 27 attempts from beyond the arc and were 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
KCC shot 42 percent behind 26 field goals from 62 shots. The Eagles made 11 of 23 shots from three-point range and were13-of-20 at the free throw line.
KCC came away with a 39-26 advantage in rebounding with freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly pulling down five rebounds to lead the Bears. Sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen, Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., had three rebounds apiece. Valley and Jensen led DMACC in assists with four apiece and Valley came away with a team-high three steals.
The DMACC women's basketball team closes out the regular season with a home game against Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Feb. 25 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC is 14-13 overall and 10-11 in the ICCAC. The Panthers dropped a 61-44 decision to DMACC when the two teams played Dec. 13 at Iowa Falls.
