- Sophomore Chloe Costello leads DMACC with 17 points
- Four other DMACC players score in double figures
- Bears improve to 23-8 for the season
Sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood led five players in double figures with 17 points as the DMACC women's basketball team coasted to an easy 95-63 win over Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the Region 11-A semifinals February 28 at Fort Dodge.
Sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls scored 13 points, sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., finished with 12 points apiece and freshman Abriya Watkins of Omaha, Neb., added 11 points as the Bears improved to 23-8 for the season.
DMACC, seeded fifth, got off to a great start, scoring the game's first 22 points and never looked back in winning two of three games against the fourth-seeded Tritons this season.
ICCC, which saw its season end at 22-9, missed its first nine shots and committed six turnovers in its first 15 possessions. The Tritons didn't get on the board until the 2 minute, 25 second mark of the first quarter when Ashlin Jacobsen made a pair of free throws. Shakani Murray made their first field goal at the 1:58 mark of the opening period.
DMACC led 28-9 at the end of the first quarter, 46-25 at halftime and 70-46 at the end of the third quarter. The Bears led by as many as 36 points in the fourth quarter.
DMACC shot 45 percent from the field, hitting 34 of 75 field goal attempts. The Bears were 13-of-29 from three-point range and 14-of-16 at the free throw line.
ICCC, led by Jacobsen's 18 points, was 19-of-59 from the field for 32 percent. The Tritons connected on five of 26 shots from beyond the arc and made 20 of 25 free throw attempts.
Wheeler's nine rebounds led DMACC to a 48-36 advantage on the boards. Freshman Mariam Omran of Giza, Egypt, had eight rebounds and sophomore Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids came away with six.
Jensen, Costello, Omran and freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly dished out three assists apiece and Jensen and Wheeler led the Bears in steals with four and three respectively.
The DMACC women's basketball team will play Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the Region 11-A championship game tonight at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles, seeded first, are 27-3 overall and ranked sixth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). They beat eighth-seeded Ellsworth Community College (ECC), 48-38, in the other Region 11-A semifinal matchup. KCC defeated DMACC in both of their regular-season games, 59-53 Jan. 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium and 76-52 Feb. 21 at Cedar Rapids.
The Region 11-A champion will advance to the 2026 NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship or the North Central District Championship pending the outcome of the Region 11-B tournament.
