Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Anna Niehaus of Carroll had 16 kills as the DMACC volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season in a 3-2 decision to Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) August 24 at Ottumwa.
DMACC, ranked 16th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II preseason poll, fell by scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 17-25, 12-15 and is 4-1 for the season. IHCC, an NJCAA Division I program, improved to 4-1 with its third consecutive victory.
Niehaus hit .389 in the match, getting her 16 kills from 36 attacks with two hitting errors. CoFR Kylie Welch of Davenport had seven kills and CoFR Alissa Weinkoetz of Afton added five. DMACC hit .210, getting 40 kills from 138 attacks with 11 hitting errors.
CoFR Elizabeth Pierce of Altoona led the Bears in assists with 19 and CoFR Sara Hansen of Hudson finished with 13. Welch had a team-high three ace serves and CoFR Rachel Eddy of Dubuque led DMACC in digs with 23. Welch finished with 21 digs, Pierce came away with 10 and Hansen and CoFR Kassidie Galloway of Mechanicsville had nine apiece. CoFR Chloe Gilgen of Modale topped the Bears in blocks with three block assists and Welch and CoFR Abby Allmon of Norwalk had two blocks apiece.
The DMACC volleyball team opens Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Sep 1 when the Bears face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) at Boone for its home opener.
