The DMACC volleyball team improved to 11-7 for the season by winning three of four matches in the Parkland Tournament September 19 and 20 at Champaign, Ill. The Bears' wins were highlighted by a 3-2 upset of Parkland College (PC), the sixth-ranked team in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
DMACC, ranked 14th, also beat Danville Area Community College (DACC) and Wabash Valley College (WVC). The Bears' loss came against Heartland (Ill.) Community College (HCC), the No. 4 team in NJCAA Division II.
Sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls had 17 kills and freshman Ramsey Johnston of Chaska, Minn., added 12 as DMACC took a 26-24, 15-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12 win from PC. The Bears hit .138 in the win, getting 49 kills from 181 attacks with 24 hitting errors.
Freshmen Kathryn Lukkarinen of Macomb, Ill., and Brooklyn Lyftogt of Van Meter contributed nine and eight kills respectively to the DMACC attack.
Johnston and sophomore Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown had 17 assists apiece and sophomore Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls came away with 10. Sophomore Danica Wrage of Waterloo and freshman Indy Johnson of Clarion contributed three ace serves apiece.
Lukkarinen led five players in double figures in digs with 24. Johnston had 23, Johnson came away with 19 and Sandvold and Anderson finished with 17 and 15 respectively. Wrage topped the Bears in blocks with four block assists.
Wheeler had 11 kills and Wrage and Lyftogt finished with six apiece in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 win over DACC. The Bears hit .204 with 33 kills from 98 attacks and 13 hitting errors.
Anderson and freshman Saige De Jong of Pella led the way in assists with 14 and 12 respectively and Sandvold came away with four ace serves.
Lukkarinen topped DMACC in digs with 18 and Sandvold added 14. Sophomore Emma Liechti of Ankeny had four blocks, including three block assists.
Wheeler's six kills topped the Bears in their 25-8, 25-20, 25-13 loss to HCC. Johnston had a team-high seven assists and Wrage added two ace serves.
DMACC got 18 digs from Sandvold and Anderson came away with 13. Liechti led the way in blocks with two block assists.
Lukkarinen's 17 kills and seven apiece from Wheeler and Johnston led the Bears to a 25-19, 25-13, 26-24 win over WVC in their final match of the tournament. They hit a tournament high .246 with 43 kills from 118 attacks and 14 hitting errors.
Anderson and De Jong had 22 and 11 assists respectively and Sandvold contributed a pair of ace serves.
Lukkarinen also led DMACC in digs with 16. Sandvold and Johnson had 14 apiece and Anderson finished with 11. Wrage came away with seven block assists and freshman Alli Sheldahl of Hubbard added five.
The DMACC volleyball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with a match against Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) Sept. 24 at Columbus, Neb. DMACC is 3-1 in ICCAC play. CCC is 10-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
