Six DMACC men's basketball players and head coach Blake Sandquist earn all-region honors

 

Six members of the DMACC men's basketball team and head coach Blake Sandquist have been honored for their accomplishments this season.

 

Sophomores Kaden Tate of Pearland, Texas, and Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., and freshmen Brent Taylor of Flossmoor, Ill., Hunter Gawron of Skokie, Ill., Kiki Deng of Des Moines and Malcolm Bragg of Newark, N.J. have been named to the Division II All-Region Men's Basketball Team and Sandquist has been named the Division II Coach of the Year.

 

Tate and Taylor were named to the first team, Smith and Gawron to the second team and Deng and Bragg to the third team. Tate was also named to the All-Defensive Team and was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

 

The team was announced March 10 by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Tate is averaging 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots a game for the Bears this season. He has pulled down 284 rebounds in 32 games, including 187 rebounds in conference play where he averaged 9.3 rebounds a game.

 

Tate is also scoring in double figures with an 11.3 average. He has scored 226 points and is shooting 66 percent from the field with 90 field goals from 137 attempts. Tate is 1-of-9 from three-point range and 45-of-80 from the free throw line. His season also includes 41 assists, 43 steals and 46 blocked shots. Tate leads the ICCAC in field goal percentage and blocked shots, is third in rebounds and fourth in steals.

 

Taylor has scored 394 points and is DMACC's leading scorer with a 12.3 average. He is shooting 45 percent from the field with 143 field goals from 321 shots. Taylor has made 36 of 133 shots from beyond the arc for 27 percent and is 72-of-91 from the free throw line for 79 percent.

 

Taylor's season also includes 104 rebounds, 88 assists, 44 steals and six blocked shots.

 

Smith has scored 311 points this season and is averaging 9.7 points a game. He is shooting 39 percent from the field with 90 field goals from 234 shots. Smith has made 74 of 194 shots from three-point range for 38 percent and is 57-of-74 from the free throw line for 77 percent.

 

Smith's season also includes 68 rebounds, 86 assists, 24 steals and four blocked shots.

 

Gawron has scored 297 points and his averaging 9.6 points a game. He is shooting 51 percent from the field with 110 field goals from 214 shots. Gawron has made 39 of 103 shots from three-point range for 38 percent and is shooting 68 percent from the free throw line with 38 free throws from 56 shots.

 

Gawron's season also includes 129 rebounds, 30 assists, 23 steals and 22 blocked shots.

 

Deng has scored 304 points and is averaging 9.5 points a game. He is shooting 42 percent from the field with 93 field goals from 224 shots, including 33-of-92 from three-point range for 36 percent. Deng has made 85 of 108 free throw attempts for 79 percent.

 

Deng's season also includes 126 rebounds, 62 assists, 39 steals and seven blocked shots.

 

Bragg has scored 269 points and is averaging 8.4 points a game. He is shooting 46 percent from the field with 95 field goals from 207 shots. Bragg has made 34 of 93 shots from beyond the arc for 37 percent and is 45-of-61 from the free throw line for 74 percent.


Bragg's season also includes 91 rebounds, 54 assists, 37 steals and seven blocked shots.

 

Sandquist has won his third consecutive Coach of the Year award after leading the Bears to a 31-1 record, including a 20-0 mark in the ICCAC. DMACC, which has a 25-game winning streak, has won three consecutive ICCAC regular-season championships during Sandquist's four seasons as head coach and has qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Basketball Championship for the third consecutive season and the sixth time in the past seven years.
