The DMACC softball team extended its winning streak to 21 games by sweeping a doubleheader from the William Penn University junior varsity (WPUJV) April 19 at Oskaloosa.
The Bears won by scores of 12-0 and 19-0 to improve to 42-3 for the season. Both games were called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
DMACC also moved into the top spot in this week's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll after spending several weeks ranked third.
Freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt belted a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Bears to their win in the opener. DMACC led 4-0 after the first inning, 10-0 after two innings and put the game away with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Clark, sophomore Abby Husak of Polk City, freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., and sophomore Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., had two hits apiece in the win including a double by Kearns, who also drove in two runs. Sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City contributed a triple to the DMACC attack.
Freshman Emma Dighton pitched the first three innings and improved to 11-1 with the win. She allowed five hits and struck out three. Freshman Sydney Kennedy of Peosta went two innings, allowing one walk and striking out one batter.
Three DMACC pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the second game. Sophomore Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt went the first two innings, walking one batter and striking out two. Sophomore Lexi Lander of Onawa struck out three and walked one in two innings and sophomore Abby Flanagan of Coggon struck out one batter in one inning in the circle.
The Bears used a 14-run first inning to take control of the game. They made it a 17-0 game with three runs in the top of the second and closed out the win with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Dighton paced DMACC at the plate with four hits, including three doubles, and drove in four runs. Kearns had three hits, including a home run and a double, and also drove in four runs and Clark had a pair of hits and three RBIs. Miller, sophomore Jada Collins of Des Moines and sophomore Layney Loyd of New London also had two hits in the win with Miller getting a home run. Other extra base hits included doubles by sophomore Tricia Sporaa of Madrid and freshman Kaylynne Salyars of Muscatine.
The DMACC softball team will play Marshalltown Community College (MCC) in a doubleheader April 28 at Marshalltown. The Tigers, an NJCAA Division I program, are 7-29. DMACC swept a doubleheader from MCC on April 14, winning a pair of 5-inning games by scores of 27-7 and 25-5. DMACC is 18-2 in Division II of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). MCC is 1-11 in Division I.
