The DMACC softball team stands at 15-6 for the season after winning four of six games on a road trip to Tennessee.
The Bears, ranked eighth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), opened the six game trip by sweeping a doubleheader from Cleveland State Community College (CSCC) by identical 10-0 scores March 13 at Cleveland, Tenn. DMACC then won a doubleheader from Dyersburg State College (DSC) on March 14, 10-5 and 2-1. Volunteer State Community College (VSCC) topped the Bears by 6-1 and 3-0 scores in a doubleheader March 15 at Gallatin, Tenn.
Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda pitched a no-hitter and freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines drove in four runs as the Bears topped CSCC in the opener on March 13. The game was called after five innings because of the run rule.
Richards, freshman Dana Blake of Indianola and sophomore Macee Reiling of Dallas Center homered for DMACC in the win and Blake and Reiling joined Richards with multiple runs batted in with two apiece. Blake had three hits and Richards came away with two.
DMACC broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fourth and made it a 3-0 game with two runs in the fifth. The Bears closed out the win with seven runs in the seventh.
Jungers struck out 13 batters and walked one in getting the win.
DMACC scored twice in the top of the first and added six runs in the second and two in the seventh in getting the win in the second game.
Sophomore Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand led the Bears at the plate with three hits and sophomore Bri Tigges of Urbandale and freshman Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines had two hits apiece. Extra-base hits included a double from Mohler, two doubles from Neuroth and home runs from Reiling and freshman Luci Weber of Dubuque. Reiling led the Bears in RBIs with three and Weber had two.
Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first three innings and got the win. She allowed four hits, struck out four and walked one. Sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater pitched two innings and walked two batters.
Weber belted a home run and she and sophomore Baylor Gregory of Papillion, Neb., drove in two runs apiece in DMACC's win in the opener on March 14. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, scored twice in the third, three times in the fourth, added a single run in the sixth and three in the seventh to come away with the win. DSC scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Richards, Weber, Mohler, Blake, sophomore Erin Ades of Boone and freshman Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf led the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a pair of doubles from Ades and Teerlinck and one each by Blake and Mohler. Weber and Gregory drove in two runs apiece.
Jungers allowed two hits, struck out nine and walked one in six innings to come away with the win. Baumgardner threw the seventh inning and allowed five runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
DSC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the second game but DMACC rallied for one run in the third and one in the fourth to get the win. The Bears were limited to six singles, one each from Blake, Tigges, Richards, Mohler, Ades and Gregory. Drake drove in one of DMACC's two runs.
Baas went the distance for the win. She allowed one run on four hits, struck out five and walked one.
VSCC scored four runs in the bottom of the first and one each in the second and fifth innings for its win over DMACC in the opener on March 15. DMACC's lone run came on a home run by Mohler, who had one of the Bears' four hits.
Jungers pitched the first three innings and suffered the loss, her fourth against five wins. She allowed five runs on four hits, struck out six and walked three. Baumgardner pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Gregory had two singles and Richards, Tigges and Teerlinck had one apiece in DMACC's loss in the second game. DSC scored on run in each of the second, third and fifth innings in coming away with the win.
Baas pitched all six innings and fell to 8-2 with the loss. She allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out 11 and walked one.
The DMACC softball team will begin play in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) March 19 when the Bears face Northeast Community College (NECC) in a doubleheader at the DMACC softball diamond. NECC is 8-15 overall.
